What is Smart-Pause Gameplay (SPG)

To combine the tactical depth of turn-based strategy games with the dynamic flow of real-time combat, we developed a pause system for Pirate Patrol called Smart Pause Gameplay (SPG).

SPG is inspired by the Real-Time with Pause (RTwP) systems found in many real-time games, but it goes a step further by significantly enhancing the player's sense of control in a real-time environment. With SPG, the game intelligently pauses based on the player's input and intent, allowing for smooth, intuitive tactical decision-making.

This system enables players to plan ahead and issue commands without breaking immersion—eliminating the need to constantly press a pause button or deal with disruptive interruptions caused by scripted or repetitive events. The result is a more fluid and responsive tactical experience that stays fast-paced while remaining deeply strategic.
